The movement of fire is captivating. Over the last four years, Heidi Vaughn has photographed some of New England’s most talented fire spinners. She says she often struggled with wanting to photograph them, video them, or just sit back and memorized with the rest of the audience during their performance.
This is a continued series where Vaughn chose to use bulb exposure with the specific intention of creating a painting effect with the spinning fire. She calls it light painting.
For Vaughn, there is a sense of losing control with bulb exposure that is similar to when she paints fluid acrylics. She says it forces her to be patient, allowing her materials and the elements create an abstract image.
